Big thanks to all the purchasers. We sold 103 pieces, raised over $2,200 for the NC Restaurant Workers Relief Fund, and 35 artists have been paid for their sales. I’m leaving this exhibit online for posterity. Some of the works are still available for purchase.

Please share with those who might be interested in helping the gallery — and the 40+ artists and craftspersons we represent — weather this storm.
The Get Off Of My Cloud exhibit moved from an idea to a physical and digital reality in just nine days in the middle of March as we began the quarantine COVID period.
If you have purchased work from H&B in the past, we thank you deeply. You helped us, and the artists we represent, grow into a substantial part of the local arts community. If you are able, please consider expanding your collection with another purchase (much of the work here is on a deep discount as a sign of the times). If you have been a fan of the haps here — but have yet to purchase work — now would be an * ideal * time to step up and support our mission, and perhaps some of your favorite artists and craftspersons. Then enjoy your artwork, craft object, or book every single day for the rest of your life, and remember this pivotal moment.
Together, we are shaping the new normal into which we will eventually emerge. Here’s to doing what we can to ensure that future includes a healthy amount of art, craft, and books — keeping them front and center in a world that often shunts them off to the side — and supporting each other financially and emotionally along the way.
all best wishes, Dave Wofford

INDIVIDUAL works TO BID ON
Just hit the bid/buy it now buttons to bring up a form. It’s that simple.
Letterpress posters by Amos Kennedy Jr. $25 each.
Amos taught at Penland in 1994 and gave one of the best slide talks I’ve ever witnessed. I heard him say “Owning a Printing Press is a political statement, and from time to time, you need to use it as such.” He has just bought a building in Detroit, and is starting a book arts center which will include workshops and equipment rental. He left behind a few posters here when I had him over for a trunk event (because UNC wouldn’t let him sell goods at his artist talk there).
Visit his website to see and buy more of them.

Lucky Strike, Elizabeth Cotten, Krispy Kreme to Neal Hutcheson. Thanks Neal.
Preston Montague. Codex Carolinum is a 26-piece botanical illustration suite featuring plants of North Carolina traditionally used for food or medicine. This graphic essay on ethnobotany, executed entirely with color pencil, explores the state from coast to mountains demonstrating seasonal characteristics of each plant and its relationship to animals and insects.
17 of the 26 pieces have been completed in the last six years and the open edition print reproductions are stellar. 16 x 20 double window mats have 11 x 14 images ($90), and 11 x 14 double window mats have 8 x 11 images ($65). We have one framed piece, framed with naturally finished cherry, R for Rhododendron. Buy It now at $300.
Preston is an amazing human being and true professional. Check out all his haps from garden design to landscape architecture to teaching workshops. In a better world, Preston lives high on the hog. In this one, like many in under-recognized professions, he struggles to find his way to a secure living, despite working his ass off and having a diverse skill set.

You have this book in your library, right?
If not, you are missing out on an evocative gem that is a tale for our times, both a heart-warming celebration of generosity and unconditional love, while simultaneously offering a critique of certain elements of modern culture.
Allan Gurganus has been reading his ever-changing story for the last 15 years, and this is the first time the story has EVER been committed to print in any form. This edition also features drawings made by Allan himself at the end of 2019 as well as an afterword chronicling the genesis and evolution of the story — which began as a commission for NPR’s All Things Considered. Click here to hear the 18 minute interview with Allan and I on The State of Things.

A few of the portraits from Raymond Goodman’s Burlap series.
Maggie Lawrence. Tim and Helga McAller. The Refugee Agricultural Project Of Carrboro. Sean Barker. Ben Shields and Patricia Parker.
“I wanted to raise the profile of the farmer. The goal with this series is to celebrate the farmer—not the land, not the toil, not the sweat, none of the other stuff. To give a little distance between the field, the farm stand, all those other things. The work I’m most proud of is about other people, and who they are and what they mean to me. There’s a power there. By isolating them in the portrait, you end up with the truth, the reality.”
